Why Waxed Cotton Makes a Better Bag

Not all tote bags are created equal.

At first glance, a tote is a tote: two handles, an open top and somewhere to throw all the things you need to carry. But the fabric it’s made from can completely change how it looks, feels and performs.

At The Contents Bag, we use waxed cotton because we wanted our bags to be lightweight and practical, but also strong, tactile and beautiful enough to carry every day.

Water-resistant by nature

One of the biggest advantages of waxed cotton is its water resistance.

The wax treatment creates a protective barrier on the surface of the cotton, helping water to bead and run off rather than immediately soaking into the fabric.

Unlike a standard untreated cotton canvas tote, waxed cotton gives you that extra layer of everyday protection without the plastic feel of many synthetic waterproof fabrics.

A texture that feels more luxurious

Waxed cotton has a distinctive handle and texture that is difficult to replicate with cheaper tote bag materials.

It feels substantial without being unnecessarily heavy, and the wax gives the fabric depth and character. Rather than feeling like a basic shopping bag, it has a more elevated, tactile finish.

Waxed cotton vs cheaper tote bag fabrics

Many inexpensive totes are made from lightweight untreated cotton, non-woven polypropylene or polyester. These materials absolutely have their place, particularly for promotional or occasional-use bags, but they don't necessarily offer the same combination of texture, strength, water resistance and longevity that we want from a Contents Bag.

And because our waxed cotton is lightweight, you get robustness without starting with a heavy bag before you've even put anything inside it.

And yes, ours is machine washable

This is where our waxed cotton is particularly clever.

The waxed cotton used for The Contents Bag is machine washable.

Because a bag designed for real life is inevitably going to get dirty.

When yours needs a refresh, simply wash it on a cool wash with non-bio detergent, hang it to dry and, if required, iron it inside out.

That makes it ideal for beach days, children's kit, travel, shopping, gym gear and everything else you wouldn't necessarily want sitting at the bottom of a precious handbag.
