Why Every Contents Bag Is Made Using Piece Work
At The Contents Bag, we spend a lot of time thinking about how things are made — not just how they look when they arrive on your doorstep. From the fabric choices to the final stitch, every detail matters to us. Which is why all of our products are made using a piece work methodology at social enterprise, Fabric Works London.
But what exactly is piece work? And why does it matter?
Let’s get into it.
What Is Piece Work?
In traditional factory production lines, one person might sew a single seam all day long. Another attaches handles. Another adds labels. The product moves from station to station, with each maker responsible for just one small part of the process.
Piece work is different.
With piece work, one maker creates the entire item — from cutting through to the final finish. They know the bag inside out because they’ve made that exact bag themselves.
It’s a slower, more skilled approach to manufacturing, and honestly, we think you can feel the difference.
Why We Love It
Better Quality, Start to Finish
When one person is responsible for the whole product, there’s naturally a greater sense of ownership and care. Every stitch, zip and strap is part of a complete process rather than one tiny repetitive task.
It also means small adjustments can happen in real time. A maker can notice if something needs refining before moving onto the next step, rather than problems only appearing at the very end of a long production line.
The result? Beautifully made products with consistency, attention to detail and craftsmanship woven into every stage.
And because our bags are designed to be used a lot — school runs, supermarkets, weekends away, beach days, life admin and everything in between — that quality really matters.
A More Rewarding Way to Make
Piece work isn’t only good for the products — it’s good for the making experience too.
At Fabric Works London, makers are able to use and develop a broad range of sewing and construction skills rather than repeating the same single task all day. There’s creativity, problem-solving and pride involved in completing an item from beginning to end.
It creates a more varied and engaging working day, and celebrates the expertise behind garment and product making.
We think that’s something worth championing.
Why Fabric Works London?
We’re incredibly proud to work with Fabric Works London, a brilliant social enterprise producing high-quality sewn products while creating meaningful employment and training opportunities within the local community.
Their ethos aligns beautifully with ours: thoughtful production, skilled craftsmanship and products designed to last.
There’s no rush-to-the-bottom manufacturing model here. Just talented people making genuinely lovely things, properly.
Making Things With Care
In a world of fast everything, piece work feels refreshingly human.
It values skill. It values time. It values the people behind the products.
And while it may not be the fastest way to make a bag, we think it’s a pretty wonderful way to make one well.
So the next time you throw your Contents Bag over your shoulder stuffed with snacks, laptops, swimming kits, emergency cardigans or approximately 47 tiny toys — know that somebody made that whole bag with care, from start to finish.
And we think that’s rather special.
